Best Antique Alaska license plates: Of course, the cute little '20s tags with art-deco underscored dates are nice, with the red and yellow 1929 tag being the nicest. As far as old Alaska license plates "that actually exist": The pre-1957 issues featuring the large flag to the left; like the '48 for example, the first one. Best of the "Not-so- Old Alaska license plates: The gold rush base is pretty; the long line of miners disappearing in the distance reminds one of the historic "table rush" days at the ALPCA nationals. Interesting that the gold rush base is based on a photo taken in a neighboring jurisdiction, (in another country actually!) Please don't hate us for liking the big standing bear, which so many Alaskans disliked in the late '70s. Toughest/Most Rare Alaska plates: Two questions about the elusive 1921: why does a license plate so small have its date stamped on it twice? And how cruel is it that such a rare license plate as this was issued only in singles?
