Best Antique Indiana license plates: We won't entertain any thought other than the first issue 1913 porcelain Indiana license plate. Yellow on black, black on yellow, and nice big type make this old license plate prettier than a ceramic honeybee. The green-on-pink 1915 Indiana license plate is the best tin, with honorable mention granted to the terrific interlocked dates with "IND" from 1917 to 1921. The war time 1943 completes a rather above average attractive run. Best of the "Not-so- Old Indiana license plates: Don't know why it took all the way to 1979 for a statewide Indy 500 license plate, but no one complained. ..At least not until 1980, when the color started fading; a common problem of the uncommonly cool and creative old Indiana license plates of the 1970s and 80s. Toughest/Most Rare Indiana plates: we realize that the '13 is a first issue, and Indiana's only porcelain license plate. But so interesting was it, that everyone tacked theirs up in the barn. Come 1914, the story was a bit different. This white on blue tin's colors faded quickly in the prairie sun, and melted in the fall rains. It does not nearly qualify as a "rare" American antique license plate, but you will find a dozen nice 1913s and even one or two common Indiana prestate license plates before a really kickin', displayable '14.
