Best Antique Louisiana license plates: Among a flock (or a herd, or a covey) of pelicans, the white on red 1942 may be the nicest one. It's the first year of the bird on the tag looking skyward. There are two varieties of pelican on old license plates of that year; the '42 we are talking about the one in which the pelican's head is tilted way back,and he has a white banana in his stomach. Also, the 1940 has many years of pelican plates preceding it, and many more pelicans in years after it -- though it remains a unique old license plate of the era: Pelicanless, and with a Louisiana state outline featured as its separator. Best of the "Not-so- Old Louisiana license plates: If not-so-old means WW2 and beyond, there are a lot to choose from: The 1950 Louisiana license plate featured a paper decal of a pelican, standing on a wood pilon. The '54 "Louisiana Yams" is a great license plate too. Sentimental favorite: '44 fiber, (sugar cane fiber no less); which features the same wacky, curly fonts, though a little thinner. This is the best pelican, because he looks like he's actually come up with a fish in his mouth! Could this be the only wartime fiber antique license plate to feature a graphic image? (No: Wyoming issued a bucking bronco fiber the same year; but Louisiana's is the only fiber featuring a pelican.)

Relatively Recent license plate department: Not as old, but certainly a future rarity is the 1984 World's Fair license plate. It's difficult to come up with a more scarce recent statewide issue anywhere in the United States. Toughest/Most Rare Louisiana plates: The 1915. A 1915 Louisiana license plate with a pelican on it may be rarer, though not authentic.
