Best Antique Maine license plates: Not many first issue antique license plates were issued with the full state name spelled out, but, ayuh, in Maine there were doing it 100 years ago, and on porcelain license plates too. Mono-syllablic Maine (the only mono-syllablic state) has never issued a license tag WITHOUT the entire state name. Depending on what types of old porcelain license plate colors you like best, any old Maine license plate is a contender for "best". The blue and white stacked-name-and-date license plates of 1914 and 1915 do have a unique look. The 1912 undated blue on yellow porcelian license plates have an unusual, and unusually attractive color combo. Early Maine porcelain tags had really great grommets on them as well, if you like that sort of thing in old license plates, and if you're lucky enough to find them intact. Best of the "Not-so- Old Maine license plates: Maine was an innovator in state slogans, and "Vacationland" has set quite the endurance record since 1937. The 1948 brass Maine plate just may be the only old license plate to look better with all its paint removed -- (not that you should actually do that.) Toughest/Most Rare Maine plates: The white on lobster red 1905 - 1911 undated first issue. If you run these antique porcelian license plates by year, good luck! Fortunately, most all other Maine plates range from prolifically common to hilariously common. The only difficulty, (and it can be difficult), is tracking down all those old license plate tabs for the 1950 base tag.
