Best Antique Maryland license plates: The 1911 second issue porcelain license plate, white on black, is a real beaut, as is the 1913 yellow on black porcelain tag. Not to "dis" the Maryland 1912 porcelain plate, but we only wish the "2" in the date wasn't so dagnab close to the lower-right mounting hole, hon. The white on green 1914 porcelain licence plate has the same problem, but not as pronounced. Nice tin old Maryland license plates of the era include the boldly lettered 1915, the 1934 "TERCENTENARY", (interesting use of typeface), and the considerate grace to add "Drive Carefully" on license plates as early as 1942.Best of the "Not-so- Old Maryland license plates: Some states have their dashes, others their diamonds, still others their dots. (We are talking about items used as number separators.) Old Maryland license plates of the 1950's and 1960's have all three, nicely alternating during the years. Forget your pelicans and zias: The '59 and '61 Maryland plates use double colons, double the time: four dots for a six digit license plate! Toughest/Most Rare Maryland plates: Handpainted, hand hammered, thin enough to clean your teeth with, and commonly coated in a grainy patina of fuzzy rust which seems to be trying to make its way up through the color, (should any original color actually remain). No ugly first issue license plate is as beautiful as the 1910 Maryland.
