First year in which Massachusetts motorists were required to get a Massachusetts automobile license (plates may not have been required): 1903. Drivers were first required to pass a Massachusetts Motor Vehicle operator's test in order to obtain a Massachusetts automobile license starting in 1920.
Before the passenger vehicle drivers license law, chauffeurs in Massachusetts were required to pass a vehicle operator'
s examination in 1907.
