Best Antique Mississippi license plates: What was Mississippi like in the 1930s? We weren't there to know first hand, but we can tell you this: Numerous states of that era (Massachusetts, Maryland, Florida -- maybe more) all experimented with "locking date tabs" on their license plates; and none were either able to figure it out, or to impart the discipline of usage to the point that they were used to the extent to which they actually saved metal...Except, Mississippi. They used locking tabs for four straight years on their ole license plates. Did this save them metal? Think about it: Genuine steel Mississippi license plates were issued in full embossed years, (no tabs, stickers or windshield art; no wartime fibers, no waffles or featherweight aluminum), for every year of the 1940's and 1950's. Honorable mention Dept.: Gotta love that 1931 white on road cone orange issue. If only Tennessee were shaped like Kansas, and had beaten Texas in the Cotton Bowl exactly 20 years earlier, well...it wouldn't be so downright unique. Best of the "Not-so- Old Mississippi license plates: The late 1970's, coming just after a slew of Bicentennial license plates from various states, was an era on the eve of an explosion of ugly graphics. The 1977 "Hospitality State" old Mississippi license plates were an exception. The color scheme made for an attractive tag, and (we think, thanks to a propensity to rust), a future "rare" antique Mississippi license plate. Toughest/Most Rare Mississippi plates: Wow, Where to begin. Is the latecomer Mississippi 1911 porcelain license plate a REAL state issued Magnolia state tag? If so, its that one. Is the dated 1913, (not discovered till 1985!) the true first issue old Mississippi? If so, then THAT one. If not then the traditional and sentimental "first issue" 1912 Antique Mississippi.
