Best Antique Ohio license plates: Just our opinion, but the 1910 porcelain, Ohio's second issue is the nicest plate from the Buckeye state. It was the first of only two porcelain plates to feature the "woodgrain" background. Though it appears difficult to create, making the woodgrain finish on a porcelain tag is not too hard. For both the Ohio 10, and the 1912 Pennsylvania porcelain license plate, woodgrain was achieved simply by dragging a small amount of black coloring over red, prior to the final bake. Best of the "Not-so- Old Ohio license plates: The early 80s comedy flick, "Cannonball Run" suggested that Ohio might be the only state with the death penalty for speeding. Not so, but they may have been the first with the "Scarlet Letter" license plates, an eye-catching red and yellow schemed plate designed to specifically denote that the driver was once convicted of a DUI offense. As for regular issue passenger plates, the 1938 covered wagon plate is a great example of an early graphic license plate. Toughest/Most Rare Ohio plates: Depending on whether you're lucky enough to own both, there are either one or two issues of undated "first issue" Ohio porcelain license plates. Both are cobalt beauties featuring a circular graphic "OH" design as state identifier. Those issued in 1908 have a thinner circular design, while the 1909 issues have a rounder "O".
