Best Antique Oklahoma license plates: The fancy, elaborate number dies, used from 1940 to 1950 make Oklahoma plates particularly appealing. The 1940 seems to have used these eye-catching numerals only on the county digits, to the left of the separator dash. Additionally, the left-most angle of number "4" was lopped off in the serial, presumably to make room for the antique-looking fives and twos. The curly threes, sixes and nines almost look exaggerated. Making these old plates even more interesting is how Oklahoma license tags generally have a homemade, almost crude look to them; many have uneven surfaces, either from overstamping during manufacture, or dings and dents for use on rough roads. The paint is often thick and gloppy, and the colors remain within the standard bleak palette of most states' plates of that era. Toughest/Most Rare Oklahoma plates: The 1915 first issue Oklahoma tag is the hardest, and the rest of the teens are scarce as well. Early Oklahoma plates are a good example of rare tin which has become more available with the advent of eBay.
