Best Antique South Dakota license plates: The first few issues of South Dakota license plates had an interesting feature: Undated 1913, 1914 and 1915 plates from a state with such a low population were bound to bear some low numbers. But license plate designers in S.D. filled the "gaps" with dashes: While there was room for five digits, anything with a four digits received a dash in the right-hand spot. Three digit plates received two dashes, or a dash on either side. A two-digit plate of the era is followed by three dashes, and these were not just numeral separators, but nice big dashes as wide as the standard number. Best of the "Not-so- Old South Dakota license plates: While Teddy Roosevelt is the only President on Mount Rushmore to have actually lived in the Dakota Territory, (in what is now North Dakota), the state to the south has honored him on their license plates far longer, and more regularly. South Dakota is perhaps best known as the home of Mount Rushmore -- best known, thanks to a half century of license plates reminding us all of it! The first year of the Rushmore tag was 1952, and since then it has been printed, stamped, screened, embossed and then screened, and even integrated as part of the raised border at the top of the plate. Taking all these Mount Rushmore plates in account, the three finest, most striking issues are the 1953, 1954 and 1955. Fortunately, none of these are too rare to obtain.

Toughest/Most Rare South Dakota plates: If an old timer tells you that the South Dakota 1913 black on white issue was once a ten dollar plate, he's telling you the truth. However, in order to remember that, he may have been collecting plates since before Lincoln's wart was carved on Rushmore.
