Best Antique Tennessee license plates: License plates shaped like Tennessee were manufactured in a custom die-cut metal process, and issued from 1936 through 1956. However, we like best the first two of the state-shaped Tennessee tags, the 1936 and 1937. Why? Because they are the only two featuring the northernmost "notch" on the western side of the plate. This genuine feature of Tennessee's map is integrated quite imaginatively in the upper right-hand bolt hole. Another amazing old Tennessee license plate is the 1927. This plate also features a state map, which serves as its irregular border, encompassing the serial numbers on what is otherwise a flat, perfectly rectangular tag. Topping it off are vertical "FRONT" and "REAR" designations in the center of each pair of plates, as well as a decidedly funky lavendar background color. Best of the "Not-so- Old Tennessee license plates: The bright orange 1951 Tennessee license plate, dutifully shaped like the state, and honoring the University of Tennessee football team, just may be the first sports-related statewide issue of any plate. Tennessee fans, license plate fans and both cannot resist the unique, eye-jarring orange. Yes, it was hard to read on the roads, but only for a year! Toughest/Most Rare Tennessee plates: The white on green 1915 first issue. Shaped more like Kansas or Colorado than Tennessee, but we'll bet you'll want this old square license tag anyway!
