Best Antique Texas license plates: The 1920, 1921, 1923 and 1924 plates are not REALLY license plates, but they sure look like them -- and you sure couldn't legally drive without them. Besides, they were all stamped, "Registered Motor Vehicle", so where's the disagreement here? Technically speaking, these four were add ons, similar to validation seals, tabs or stickers -- the first three used in conjunction with the undated 1917 first issue plate, the '24 used with an undated '23. All four of these dated little "radiator tags" were affixed NEXT to the base license plate, not covering of obscuring the main plate. Prior to 1920, dated round seals featuring a star, and containing no numerals were issued to validate the first issue base for the years 1917, 1918 and 1919. You may see some of these old Texas license plates on eBay, mistakenly advertised as old motorcycle license plates. Best of the "Not-so- Old Texas license plates: The 1992. Why? It was the last year you could collect dated stickered license plates for this great big state. After this, Texas went to windshield validations. Toughest/Most Rare Texas plates: Unless you count the first few "Texas radiator seals", the first issue base is the most difficult Texas license plate to obtain. This is intriguing, as Texas has always had a large motorist population, having manufactured the big black tag for six years through 1922, and even issued them in pairs, meaning that well over a million were distributed.
