Best Antique Utah license plates: The 1923 and 1924 feature bright colors, and a nice italic typography of the state name in descending diagonal letters. Enough for design; how's this for originality: Like other states in 1944, Utah issued a metal-saving, vegetable fiber license plate. But only in Utah was the serial number first printed on a piece of paper, which was then pasted on the face of the plate. This '44 paper piece looked similar to the '43 windshield sticker of the era, so what was the deal here? Was a last-minute decision made to mount windshield stickers on fiber? Or, did the windshield stickers come back from the factory with the glue on the wrong side! Even odder was the fact that the sticker was considerably smaller than the piece of fiberboard to which it was attached. The paper itself, if you looked close, resembled a banknote, and was probably not easy to counterfeit. Motorists who did not wish to lose their plates to Utah's punishing sun and snow mounted a piece of glass tightly above it. Best of the "Not-so- Old Utah license plates: After World War Two, the 1947 plate featuring the slogan, "This Is The Place" is the one to have; firstly, because of the head scratching by out of staters unfamiliar its significance in Utah; and secondly because few states even have such a statement so emblematic of its history -- and none so appropriate for re-use as a license plate slogan. Toughest/Most Rare Utah plates: Examples of the 1915 Utah license plate, green on white and featuring the single-letter "U", continue to be found unexpectedly in the rough. But this is not an easy plate to find when you really need one!
